This week we went to the Arts Preview for the Easter Show for the first time. I took lots of photos, but sadly, I don't have one of Emma's perfect 1-ply silk shawl that won the Finest Shetland Lace Scarf or Shawl. It was breathtakingly beautiful. I did take lots of other photos of both the knitting and the cake decorating, and you can see them here. There is sublime, and there is faintly ridiculous. (I'm not sure why the ridiculous often seems to involve representations of animals...).
There were lots of local knitters there, many from Ravelry, and as you can see we did manage to herd every together for a group photo. We had a lot of fun, and we were thrilled that so many of our friends made it into the glass cabinets, many with ribbons attached. Well done, Donna, Kris and Julie, and especially Ailsa who kind of scooped the pool with a first, a third, and two highly commendeds. Congratulations also the the other local ravellers, Gemma and frillseeker, whom I don't know (yet!) but whose names were on winning work.
I'm not a competitive knitter myself, but I certainly appreciate the work that everyone had put into their entries. I haven't been to the Easter show for several years, but the last time I did the knitting cabinets were embarrassing. Now that there is more modern work in beautiful yarns being submitted, all we have to do is get the categories more up-to-date, and work on making the judging more transparent. Piece of cake!

I love Ailsa's Ivel coat - that textured pattern (scallop?) is beautiful. As is Donna's Autumn Rose. I am in awe of the skill and crafty goodness that produces such fabulous works of art.
The cakes are... interesting.
